World's First Blood Diagnosis Based on Biomarkers from Tuberculosis Bacteria

The world's first successful commercialization of blood-based tuberculosis fast diagnosis kits has begun in Korea.

Sugentech announced on the 26th that it has signed a contract with Woongbi Meditech, a local distributor of diagnostic and medical devices, to sell its tuberculosis fast diagnosis kit in Korea. The contract is expected to enable rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis within 20 minutes at the nation's 300 general hospital-level medical institutions and medical institutions under the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Since the rapid diagnosis kit of tuberculosis was listed as a health insurance item in December last year, Sugentech has been preparing for sales in Korea. Among the companies that discussed the distributor contract, the company explained that it concluded a domestic distributor contract with Ungbi Meditec as it considered Woongbi Meditech to be the best partner in terms of distribution network and expertise.

Tuberculosis is one of the three major infectious diseases managed by the World Health Organization, and is estimated to amount to 2 to 3 trillion won a year in the active tuberculosis market alone, a company source said. "A third of the world's population is developing into an active tuberculosis patient with 5 to 10 percent of the symptoms of tuberculosis, of which there are about 250,000 suspected cases in Korea each year, and around 1,800 deaths per year."

"So far, tuberculosis diagnosis has focused on extracting deep dialects from patients' lungs, and this method requires specialized clinical pathologists and specialized facilities and equipment to conduct tests," he said.
