Status of TB in Korea
In Korea, 55 people are detected daily, and 4 people die everyday from tuberculosis.
Korea is ranked at No.1 in TB incidence among the 38 OECD countries.
The current national vaccine policy in S. Korea is to give a single dose of BCG vaccine within 4 weeks of birth, but the efficacy of the BCG wanes after 5-10 years. In addition, BCG revaccination program has already been discontinued due to a lack of evidence on its effectiveness.
With the development of antibiotics, the incidence rate significantly decreased, but the incidence rate tends to increase again due to the occurrence of HIV and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Recently tuberculosis reactivation associated with chemotherapy and immunotherapy has been mentioned as well.
Worldwide, about 10 million new cases occur and 1.49 million deaths every year.
About 20,000 new cases of tuberculosis and more than 1,300 deaths occur in S.Korea every year.
